Amy Mason in The Islanders, live at the Electric Palace

Electric turns indie and folk!

The Electric Palace cinema continues its successful run of occasional live events – this time with a night of seaside-themed theatre, starring indie and folk musicians. Presented by Show and Tell productions,  these acclaimed live theatre pieces portray seaside adventure and escapism with performances by Art Brut’s Eddie Argos, folk singer Jim Moray and John Osborne of John Peel’s Shed fame, writes Annie Waite.

The Islanders (55mins)

The Islanders is an indie musical about memories, first-loves and growing up – by Amy Mason (pictured, above), Eddie Argos (from the band Art Brut) and folk star Jim Moray. In the late ’90s, teenage couple Amy and Eddie fled their bedsit of damp walls, smashed furniture and only-orange foods for a holiday on the Isle of Wight.

  • ‘A must see… warm and sad and subtly uplifting’ – The Stage
  • ‘A piece which feels both personal but also entirely universal’ – What’s On Stage
  • ‘Moving between Mason’s spoken-word monologues and Argos’ equally naked songs, this is as raw as it gets in a charmingly low-key rites of passage that’s both poignant and funny’ – The Herald

On The Beach (50mins)

John Osborne – creator of Radio 4 and West End sell-out show John Peel’s Shed – documents a lunchtime walk through a British seaside town: charting the lives, loves and nostalgia all found down on the beach.

  •  ‘Thoroughly charming… A beautifully-constructed, ode to holidays by the British seaside’ – What’s on Stage
  • ‘Deceptively simple, it served as a framework for his delicate observations, taking in rock pools and beach cricket, tantrums regretted and indelible memories made’ – The Observer
  • ‘With beguilingly lo-fi charm, Osborne spins a captivating mini-account’ – Evening Standard

Seaside Theatre Double Bill on Sunday 27 April, 7pm at Electric Palace Cinema, 39a High Street, Hastings, TN34 3ER. Telephone 01424 720393. All tickets £10 (includes both shows together) – Book tickets.
