Soprano Alice Privett kicks off Fairlight Hall song season
Locally raised soprano Alice Privett gives the first in a season of five concerts at Fairlight Hall arranged in collaboration with the Oxford Lieder Festival, as the venue’s Dominika Hicks explains.
OLF is the UK’s biggest and most renowned festival of classical song, and the recipient of a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award. As well as presenting many of the world’s greatest musicians in Oxford each October, Oxford Lieder supports the very brightest artists of the new generation both at the Festival and further afield throughout the year.
Over the course of the year, Oxford Lieder’s artistic director – the pianist Sholto Kynoch – will introduce exceptional emerging professional singers to Fairlight, in a range of programmes designed to appeal to all and to showcase brilliant young voices and glorious music. Sholto will give a spoken introduction to each programme, and there will be a chance to meet the artists informally over coffee after each of the performances. The perfect way to pass a Sunday morning.
Season’s opener
The season begins on Sunday 27 January with soprano Alice Privett performing songs by Schubert, Richard Strauss and Wolf.
Ms Privett made a sensational impression at last year’s Oxford Lieder Festival, giving an exceptional performance of Schoenberg’s seminal Pierrot Lunaire as well as stepping in at short notice for songs by Zemlinsky. Alice grew up in Hastings and is delighted to be giving this recital on ‘home turf’.
With Schubert’s birthday just a few days away on 31 January, we celebrate his rich legacy with a number of his songs, including the famous settings of Goethe’s character Mignon, from his epic novel Wilhelm Meister. Alice also performs Strauss’s Ophelia songs and songs from Hugo Wolf’s Spanish Songbook.
All events begin at 11am. The concerts last approximately one hour and are followed by coffee and cake.
Tickets – £10, including coffee and cake, are available online. A season pass – all five concerts for the price of four – can also be purchased.
