Jazz Brunches on Hastings Pier

As part of Summer Marquee, Hastings Pier are holding four Jazz Brunches across four Tuesdays in August. On Tuesday 8 August, music will be provided by Bluesette Helen Sharpe and Jonas Larsson. Jonas has been in many bands in his native Sweden and more recently Hastings, where he currently resides.

Jonas is an amazing jazz guitarist and Helen and Jonas have both spent a lot of time working on a fantastic set list of jazz classics that celebrate and show off Helen’s low range to its full potential. Every song is a classic whether it’s slow, heartfelt and full of longing to more up-tempo, fun standards.

Dom Pipkin

Dom Pipkin

On Tuesday 14 August, Hastings Pier will welcome Dom Pipkin and The Ikos who play music infused with the spirit and vibes of New Orleans and Louisiana. Playing the piano since childhood, Dom Pipkin studied at the Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London, but found his restless spirit drove him to playing with jazz and blues bands as a more practical education.

He travelled the world with Errol Linton’s Blues Vibe, discovering the New Orleans piano sound of Dr John and Professor Longhair along the way. He has played and studied in New Orleans many times with Jon Cleary, and opened up on the piano for Dr John in 2006, and for Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in 1998.

He has recorded as a session player on many albums, including with David Byrne, Ray Davies from the Kinks, Cornershop, and Morcheeba on their million selling ‘Big Calm’ album. He has played solo piano for film director legend Stanley Kubrik, and ran a successful New Orleans music night at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London for two years with many great guest musicians visiting.

Rob-leakeSwinging by on Tuesday 22 August we will welcome Rob Leake Quintet. Rob says: “I graduated from Leeds College of Music with a BA in Jazz Studies and have been a freelance player and teacher on the South Coast since 2001. I specialise in saxophone and bass clarinet as a player and have played extensively on the jazz, salsa and function band scene. Bands include Bellowhead, Polar Bear, Oriel, Roberto Pla, Osvaldo Chacon, Trevor Watts. Now I run a number of bands and play regularly as a sideman.”

Rounding up our Jazz Brunches on Tuesday 29 August we have Chantelle Duncan. Originally from Scotland, Chantelle performs in a wide variety of musical genres. After studying jazz & popular music in Newcastle, where she won Young Jazz Soloist of the Year at the Blackfriar’s Jazz Festival (now Newcastle Jazz Fest), she went on to sing internationally before settling into the London music scene.  Chantelle is now a full time resident in St Leonards and when she’s not writing and touring, can be heard singing locally.
