Here come The Girls …
There’s only so much machismo a girl can take. Rock Astrologer Enid Williams checks out the live music scene in Hastings as the girls are back in town. Let’s hear it for the women, doing it for themselves.
When I first picked up a bass as a rebellious fourteen year old back in the mid seventies, little did I imagine a music scene still dominated by men some forty odd years later. This Saturday though, Hastings offers up not just one, but two noteworthy female bands.
Down at the Carlisle, footing the bill alongside local heroes the ever popular Kid Kapichi are a band you’ll soon be hearing more of, the ‘catch ’em while you can’ Kiffs. With sharp as nails Gemini Talullah on guitar, no messing around Virgo Honor on drums, let’s have some action Aries Lola on bass and cool Capricorn Bonnie on guitar and lead vocals, these self assured young teenagers look set to make waves over the next few years. Influenced by a wide range of bands and artists from the Clash, Who, Chilli Peppers via Karen O and Debbie Harry through to Anna Calvi and Amy Winehouse, their latest offering ‘Like You’ gives a taste of what’s to come. With their sixties influenced logo and some fine bass outroing these girls know their own minds, so, if as the song says you’d like to get to know the Kiffs better … then it’s Saturday night at the Carly for you mate.
It’s been a year since the feisty ‘Maid in Hastings’, ‘Maid of Ace’ graced this town and shook the sadly demised Tubman. With two Scorpios, an Aries and a Capricorn making for one hell of a force to be reckoned with, planet Mars rules the show in true angry, raucous punk fuelled style. The four sisters, Ali, Anna, Abby and Amy return to the old Pig in Paradise, now the regal Palace for a night of mayhem as part of their latest UK and European tour. Check out ‘Bone Deth’, ‘Raise the Minimum Wage’ and head on down to America Ground where they’ll be raising the roof this weekend!
