Fumiya Koido to give Friday’s online piano recital

Hastings International Piano continues its series of short online concerts this Friday with a recital by Fumiya Koido, winner of the 2019 piano concerto competition. Nick Terdre reports.

Fumiya Koido took top prize at last year’s Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition in a hard fought contest. He returns, as it were, to give a recital on Friday in Hastings International Piano’s series of short online recitals.

On the programme are Chopin’s Etude Op 10-11, the first movement of Haydn’s Sonata No.33 in C minor and the first movement of Scriabin’s Sonata No.3 Op.23.

Fumiya Koido was born in Kamaishi, Japan, in 1995. After beginning studies at the Toho University of Music in 2014, he won grand prix in the first Kawai International Piano Competition in Tokyo the following year.

He followed this up in 2017 by taking first prize in the 21st Hamamatsu Piano Academy Competition and the Coimbra World Piano Competition in Portugal, and second prize in the 4th Victor Merzhanov International Piano Competition in Russia.

After graduating from Toho in 2018, he is now taking a soloist diploma course with Professor Mamiko Suda and studying with Boris Petrushansky in Imola Piano Academy.

“In these times when the livelihood of our musicians is at risk, with engagements being cancelled and studies on hold, this series aims to provide an income to the young competition prizewinners as well as offering Hastings Piano supporters and the wider public something to look forward to at the end of the week,” says Hastings International Piano, as the organisation behind Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, Hastings International Piano Festival and various educational initiatives now styles itself.

While concerts are free to view, members of the online audience are invited to make a voluntary donation to the Hastings International Piano Engagement Fund, or to consider becoming a Friend of Hastings International Piano.

Previous recitals have featured Roman Kosyakov, Maxim Kinasov, Su Yeon Kim and Alexander Panfilov. Next week’s recital will be given by Sylvia Jiang, one of last year’s prizewinners.
