A 'fantastic and immersive experience for all the senses'

Come on within, it’s the mighty Finn

In April 2014, HKB Finn, with the help of a host of amazing talents, developed a new poetry based opera  known as AMPLiFiER, the world’s first spoken-word opera, which is due to be performed in Hastings this Friday as part of the AfriKàBa Festival.

Photography exhibit 1.

It is the story of three Africans who have reached crisis point in their lives, so they go on a quest to find solace. It explores the lives of a man driven by fear, a woman lost in hope and a character known only as love, who are all seeking solace in the city. Not knowing if their needs or fears are being amplified by their current situation, they try to make sense of life before they run out of time. With performance poetry as its libretto, jazz guitar and voice as the soundtrack, it is viewed against a backcloth of a specially created silent film.

The second half features the HKB FiNN TRiO, a poetry and jazz collective, which has  appeared in over 38 countries sharing their wonderful songs and incredible sounds. Led by multi-disciplinary artist HKB FiNN, they tap into the roots of popular music with a combination of spoken word, jazz and world music; daring to be acoustic in the digital age, they explore a wide range of topics concerning love, life and spirituality, always with great finesse and incredible power.

The performance is at the Hastings Museum

and Art Gallery which also hosts HKB Finn’s new photo exhibition called MiSOGYNY iS SUiCiDE until 30 November. HKB FiNN has journeyed to the Far East, Europe, North and South America and beyond. During these journeys he collected photographs and poems which now form the collected sounds of Madagascar, Japan, Martinique and France – a soundtrack to an exhibition of beautiful poetry and photography .

HKB Finn is assisted by Yinka Shonibare MBE, Gary Stewart, Nathaniel-Antonio Lloyd, Glynis LeFlores, Lisa Lore and SUFA UK.

The AfriKàBa Festival, curated by Gwyneth Wint, comprises two weeks of great live events starting Saturday 4 October plus an exhibition at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery from 20 September until 30 November and The Beacon from 3 October. As usual AfriKàBa brings something for everyone: music, dance, family activities, debate and film.
