Allison Crowe’s only UK gig!

A St Mary In the Castle coup! Canadian Allison Crowe and band are coming to St Mary In The Castle, as part of their European tour and this will be their only UK date. Thom Kofoed writes.

Native of Canada, Allison is super excited to be playing in Hastings especially after finding out that Hastings is the birth place of the Canadian conservationist, Grey Owl! In fact Allison’s bass player Dave Baird is an expert on ornithology, so the whole band can’t wait to go up on the West Hill to visit his home! Grey Owl saw out the end of his days in Allison’s native Saskatchewan, so it seems fitting that she will be making this pilgrimage!

Allison has brought down the house opening for Carol Ann Duffy, Britain’s Poet Laureate, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Master of the Queen’s Music; she’s toured with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and cameos in the Hollywood Superman blockbuster, Man of Steel.

Crowe’s “supernaturally agile and exquisite voice” fuses with her piano, guitar, fiddle and bodhran-playing, along with the sounds of cellist, Celine Greb (from Germany’s Black Forest), multi-instrumentalist, Sarah White, (out of Newfoundland, Canada), and bassist, Dave Baird (Vancouver Island, BC). The band’s gorgeous hybrid of Canadiana, Celtic, jazz, roots, folk, soul and rock bridges vital originals with fresh interpretations of classics by such artists as Leonard Cohen, Annie Lennox and The Beatles.

“Once famously described as possessing a style akin to ‘Elton John meets Edith Piaf’, the Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Crowe is renowned for her ability to blend control and melodrama.” MOJO

“Ever wonder what it would have been like to listen to a gifted singer/songwriter from Saskatchewan in a small, intimate hall before she became Joni Mitchell? Don’t fret the missed opportunity. There’s no need to turn back the clock. Check out Allison Crowe.” The Record

“The most honest, heartfelt, and directly intimate concert in my entire life.” Ross Hocker, NPR

Allison Crowe and Band, St Mary in the Castle, 16 April. Start: 7:30pm Tickets £14. Tickets are available from Hastings Tourist Information, MusicGlue.com and on the door.
