Jerwood receives Sussex Heritage Trust Award
The annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards are designed to recognise high quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly built projects. The Jerwood Art Gallery, designed by HAT Projects, was the recipient this year of the Public and Community Award, and HOT reporter Joe Fearn went along to see the hand crafted slate plaque being officially attached to the building in the gallery courtyard.
The plaque and accompanying certificate were welcomed by Jerwood Director Liz Gilmore, and the plaque was officially unveiled by The Mayor of Hastings, Cllr Alan Roberts. The Jerwood received the Public and Community Award, which is for restorations or new projects that provide or improve facilities for the community, voted for by a judging team comprising a Heritage Trust Trustee, a professional in the appropriate field and a ‘lay person’ to ensure a balanced view. The criteria for receiving the award include the building or project’s suitability of purpose, the best use of the site, quality of workmanship and suitability of materials used.
The Sussex Heritage Trust Chairman, Christopher J Gebbie OBE, praised the innovative design of the Jerwood, and commented on the design of the windows, where panoramic views over the Stade seem like an artwork in themselves. The ceremony was attended by members of the fishermen’s community.
