22. Winter Sunset Over Leigh Dyer’s Boat by Jennifer Baird

Connecting musicians and singers with local artist

Artist Jennifer Baird is putting a call out to musicians and singers who might like to come along to her forthcoming exhibition The Enchantment Aesthetic, at Hastings Arts Forum. Hannah Collisson writes.

Jennifer Baird invites musicians to pop in with their instruments to the gallery at any time during the 13 days that the show runs (15 – 27 May, excluding the private views), to improvise in front of a painting that resonates with them, or even to the collection in general. The gallery is open every day except Mondays from 11am to 5pm.

From paintings evocative of rainforest life to mystical abstract pieces and everything in between, new exhibition The Enchantment Aesthetic is a rare opportunity to view such a large body of artist Jennifer Baird’s work in one place.

For the last five years Jennifer has made her home in Hastings, though her outlook remains international, having lived and worked in Trinidad and Tobago for more than 30 years, the last 16 years of which was as a recluse in the remote rainforest.

Well-known Hastings landmarks appear in Jennifer’s paintings such as the descriptively titled Winter Sunset Over Leigh Dyer’s Boat, and On The Way To Jerwood Gallery, while Sun:Kiss:Eagle:Woman:Jungle:Bliss evokes the tropical heat, bliss, wildness and magic of the life she led in her rainforest hermitage on the Caribbean island of Tobago, and Deep Time is an abstract series depicting vast time spans, as tectonic plates shift and flow over and under each other.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a 100-page catalogue, available to purchase, which details the inspiration and ideas behind each of the 55 pieces.

The Enchantment Aesthetic: Jennifer Baird: There are two private views on Tuesday 15 May and Friday 18 May from 6.30pm at Hastings Arts Forum.
