Enchanting summer theatre celebrating a remarkable forgotten female artist

Following on from their acclaimed Windrush production, ExploreTheArch, Sussex’s experiential and most unconventional theatre company, are back with a hauntingly beautiful inter-European migration story. The House of Marcelle is inspired by the love letters of an extraordinary Belgian painter, Marcelle van Caillie. Marcelle settled in London in 1955, one of many restless Europeans shifting around the continent after the trauma of WW2. The show opens on Monday 29 July and runs into August. HOT’s Erica Smith enters the turbulent world of a remarkable woman.

The new production by ExploreTheArch began this weekend. Erica Smith took a voyage to 19th century Russia to meet Armenian born painter, Ivan Aivazovsky.

The House of the Man who painted the Sea

ExploreTheArch’s summer show opens on Friday 4 August in St Leonards celebrating the act of painting the sea and a marine artist largely unknown in this corner of the world. Erica Smith investigates the background to this project which marks the UNESCO 200th anniversary of Armenian Ivan Aivazovsky’s birth.

Mary Anning rocks up to Hastings Museum 

Hastings Museum and Art Gallery (HMAG) has a new temporary exhibition, celebrating Mary Anning and fossils. The local theatre group ExploretheArch is also involved. The exhibition runs from early November 2023 till the New Year. Bernard McGinley reports.

New project puts Hastings’ high-rise towers centre stage

The Four Courts high-rise tower blocks in Hollington dominate the skyline from certain vantage points, but little is known of their heritage or the communities who live there. A new project aims to make good this lack, with a free tour and concert this Saturday, 2 September. Report by Gail Borrow of ExploreTheArch theatre company and HOT’s Nick Terdre.
