Large turn-out for area action plan walkabouts

Yumino Seki is Under the Moon at the museum

So often you hear in Hastings, the phrase “Aren’t we lucky”– about the weather, the sea, the culture and the diverse creativity of art and music. Surprisingly, amongst this diversity is Butoh dance, created, choreographed and performed by Yumino Seki. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths talked to her about her latest production at Hastings Museum, Gekka, Under the Moon

Still from Finding Camille

Finding Camille puts the focus on Alzheimer’s

Local film-maker Bindu De Stoppani hosts a special screening at the Electric Palace cinema this weekend of her latest feature, Finding Camille. Here, Annie Waite hears about Bindu’s process for creating this moving, intimate and at times heartbreakingly humorous on-the-road journey of a father and daughter getting to know each other.

Walk-in Centre campaigns continue to raise concerns

This week has been a busy time for people concerned about the potential closure of the town centre walk-in health centre. All week there have been campaigners getting signatures for the Labour Party-supported petition, on Friday 21 September Amber Rudd MP is holding a meeting at Sussex Coast College Hastings, and on Saturday 22nd at 1pm there will be a get-together outside the Walk-In Centre for people to show their support for keeping the service in the town centre. HOT’s Erica Smith gives us an update.

Carmen for all tastes from Barefoot Opera

There are two more chances to see Barefoot Opera’s dazzling production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen in Hastings – either this Friday at St Mary in the Castle or, if a shortened version is more up your street, at the Source Park on Sunday 30. Director Jenny Miller talks to HOT’s Nick Terdre. Photos by Chris Parker.

Sustainability on Sea: 22-30 September!

Sustainability… makes sense, n’est-ce pas? This week of events, jointly organised by Transition Town Hastings (TTH) and Energise Sussex Coast (ESC), is celebrating all things sustainable in our local area: gathering together as many of the organisations who are already thinking in sustainable terms. Starting with the ocean symposium, culminating in a big festival day and with all sorts of good stuff happening in between, you are very welcome to come along, check things out and get involved.

Genuinely in awe of Ore

Ore is said to be one of the poorest parts of the country, yet HOT’s Zelly Restorick feels it has much to offer its residents, workers and passing through visitors. With this in mind, she spoke to Mags Pawson, the manager at Ore Community Centre (OCC), whose dedication and generosity have made the centre a thriving hive of activities and events for many years. Long may the OCC ship sail!
