Hastings blind people benefit from grant

Please help spread the word to anyone you know who is blind: British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF), which provides specially adapted audio equipment to blind and partially sighted people across the UK, will put a £1,000 grant from the Magdalen and Lasher Charity to good use in Hastings, as they explain.

The St Leonards Pub hosts ‘lock-in like no other’!

A brand new dark comedy brings a ‘lock-in like no other’ to the St Leonards Pub for one night only. Time Please, which launched to rave reviews in March, sees feisty publican, Cath (Kate Tym) and her stoically optimistic husband, Steve (John Knowles) struggling to make ends meet in their run down pub. Closing time takes a sinister turn when Keith (Garry Fox), one of their regulars, emerges – off his head and with a planet-sized chip on his shoulder. Chock full of wild conspiracy theories, Keith wants his story heard and Cath and Steve find themselves caught up in his crack-pot plan…and it’s not going to end well.

Peter Chowney chosen as Labour’s candidate in parliamentary election

Another parliamentary candidate is in place, with the selection of Hastings Borough Council leader Peter Chowney to represent Labour. The LibDems chose their man long ago and the Greens make their choice later this week, but the signs are that Ukip will not be contesting the seat this time. Nick Terdre reports.

Another chance to see ‘Toby Belch is Unwell’

The play, ‘Toby Belch Is Unwell’ will be performed at The Garage at The Horse and Groom with Sidney Kean playing the challenging eponymous role with passion and aplomb. In this instance, John Knowles, local writer, performer and all round creative initiative-taker, sits in the director’s chair. Zelly Restorick writes.

Evocative concert from talented Molly and Jack in unique  church setting

Hastings’ annual Jack in the Green is renowned for its May Day parade and its morris dancing, but the four-day programme always throws up a handful of good concerts too, and that is before you even get to the Hastings Folk Fest in the week that follows. One of the highlights of JitG this year was Molly Evans and Jack Rutter performing in St Clement’s Church in the Old Town – HOT correspondent Darren Johnson spent a congenial evening enjoying their concert.

Womens’ Aid is offering free domestic abuse training in Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea to become an Ask Me Ambassador. They are looking for people to ‘break the silence of domestic abuse in our community’, so that you would know what to do if someone tells you they are being abused.

To be hopeful…

At the end of last year, a postcard with words by Howard Zinn was delivered anonymously and unexpectedly through the postbox of HOT’s Chandra Masoliver, who then sent it on to HOT’s Zelly Restorick, who now shares the words with you here. Words which seem especially relevant at this time.
