Enjoying the challenges in Papua New Guinea

In 1978, when Chris Sanderson and her husband Don decided to leave a settled life in Hastings to teach in newly independent Papua New Guinea, they could hardly have guessed that, as Chris puts it, “the forthcoming adventure would change me forever.” How that happened she describes in a fascinating detail in Another ‘Growing up in New Guinea,’ as Nick Terdre recounts.

Sun 15 Jan is Martin Luther King Jr Day

Ever since Claudine Eccleston moved to Hastings about four years ago, she has hosted a house party to celebrate Martin Luther King Junior’s birthday on 15 January (MLK Day). Each year the party has got bigger and louder and more fun. This year, due to popular demand, the party is going public and will be hosted by the newly re-launched Palace venue on Hastings seafront. HOT’s Erica Smith catches up with Claudine for a bit of history and the sweet and low-down on this Sunday’s party with purpose.

Saturday night’s alright for . . Hastings Sinfonia

Hastings Sinfonia is now a well-established feature of the Hastings music season, presenting what they themselves describe as ‘popular, well-known classics together with some exciting new works giving a balanced programme suitable for everyone.’ At the end of this month they’re showcasing their talent with a winter concert at St John the Evangelist Church in St Leonards. Toby Sargent leafs through the programme.

Pin-Ups: David Bowie comes to Norman Road

David Bowie died one year ago. His death was the first of many from the performing arts during 2016, but also the one for which the public reaction around the world was the most intense. An exhibition of photographs of him across nearly 50 years has just opened at the Lucy Bell Gallery in Norman Road. Toby Sargent went to the preview last Saturday.

Hastings Museum and Art Gallery will hold an exhibition devoted to George Graham’s mysterious Creation Paintings from 20 January to 7 May 2017. Alex Brattell offers a preview.

Double header with Art Themen and FILO Allstars starts new year in style for Jazz Hastings

Jazz Hastings is starting off the New Year in style next Tuesday, January 10, with a special benefit performance at the East Hastings Sea Angling Association on the Stade. It will feature a double bill with the ever-popular Art Themen Quartet and an exciting new local band, the FILO Allstars. The club’s Julian Norridge previews the evening.

In memory of Pete Burden

Saxophonist Pete Burden, a familiar figure to jazz-lovers in Hastings and well beyond, died in hospital last week. Tony Frost, a regular in the audience, writes a short appreciation, provides the pictures and rounds up some of the tributes paid to Pete.
