Self-portraiture is always a fascinating subject for artists. How to show off your best side, your personality and how to incorporate yourself into your style of painting. In anticipation of how artists see themselves, HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to see The Painter Behind the Canvas at the Jerwood Gallery.

Penny Panagi’s Purdy is in peril

Purdy the Yellow ex-BT transit van is infamous in Hastings and the surrounding areas and also with the online car community as she is regarded as an absolute survivor. Her survival is a credit to owner Penny Panagi who, due to unforseen circumstances needs some assistance in helping Purdy get back on the road. Erica Smith finds out how you can help get Purdy ship shape and, more importantly, in Penny’s ownership.

When the Black Dog bites…

The news of Sally Brampton’s death earlier this month came as a shock to her many friends in Hastings, and many, many more people who only knew her through her journalism. Sally often wrote about depression because she knew about it first hand. Below, Cllr Robert Cooke, Deputy Leader Conservative Group and Councillor for Ashdown Ward writes about his experience of depression.

Last chance to take a peek

If you haven’t already done so, get your skates on and go and see Sharon Haward’s PEEK installation – white voile sheets flapping in the wind just up St John’s Road from Warrior Square station – which comes to the end of its run on Wednesday 25 May. Sharon and Christine Gist, curator of The Space, in which the installation is housed, give their thoughts on the work.

The Hastleons, Hastings and St Leonards’ premier amateur musical theatre group are celebrating a milestone in their existence this week. 

1066 Cycling Festival

The 1066 Cycling Festival is a brand new free two day festival celebrating everything cycling. The festival will run over the weekend 11 and 12 June in two venues, Hastings and Bexhill.
