The speakers at the anti Trident rally organised by CND in Trafalgar Square last weekend made it clear why spending billions of pounds on a weapon of mass destruction would be madness, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick, who attended the rally. It is illegal to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons; the systems are open to being hacked; it’s not a deterrent against terrorist attacks, nor bio or chemical weaponry; owning them makes us a target and there’s a global movement to make them illegal, joining other weapons of mass destruction, making them a poor investment – and yet, the pressure is on the UK to be Amongst the Big Boys with the Most Up To Date Big Guns, so that we can re-assure ourselves we’re a global Super Power.
Twenty rare trees have been planted in Alexandra Park in Hastings to ensure that the park continues to hold the most diverse and interesting tree collection of any public park in England.

Renaissance Theatre Company has been performing as a group since 2009 when they came together in memory of two very special friends, Sandra Woodhams and Sharon Guy Waller, who sadly passed away that year. Since then they have performed two concerts at The Phoenix Venue and a further three musicals. Their aim is to continue with a production every year and to support the chosen charities, St Michael’s Hospice, in memory of Sandra, and the Shazzie Sparkle Trust, in memory of Sharon. So the first three days showed us how good their memory and technique was, but now the remaining 18 contestants had to show us that they could make a line sing, and produce exquisite airy runs one after another. And of course even we amateurs would be able to spot the errors in the exposed passage work of Mozart and Beethoven, writes HOT’s David Pullen.
For once, the judges of the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition come under the spotlight as they participate in the masterclass for the semi-final contestants at Fairlight Hall this Thursday. What better opportunity could there be for piano teachers, prospective entrants and others generally interested in such competitions to appreciate what goes on in a judge’s mind, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack?
