By-elections results: as you were

There were no surprises in the outcome of last week’s by-elections, with both Labour and Conservative holding the three seats in play, but both the Green Party and an independent candidate were pleased with their showing. Nick Terdre reports.

Mention the two words ‘Quentin Blake’ and a smile of recognition appears on the faces of both adults and children. Happy memories of childhood books. It is always a pleasure spending time in the company of Quentin Blake’s imagination, so HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to go and see his exhibition, Life Under Water – A Hastings Celebration.

Opera South East’s Carmen production honoured

John Rycroft has just received an Accolade of Excellence 2014 for Musical Excellence. The reward was received on behalf of Opera South East for their production of Carmen last October. The award was made by the South East Region NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association)  at Wessex Arts Centre, Alton College in Hampshire, writes Chris Cormack.

Beauty in black and white

Audrey Hepburn – what an icon. There can’t be too many people who have not succumbed to the Hepburn style and charm. In photographs or film she was certainly a class act. And beautiful. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to Lucy Bell’s gallery to check out that enigmatic beauty in some previously unseen photographs taken in 1952 and 1964.

A friend of mine has asked me to write about her motor-biking friend, who died at the end of June on the road to Icklesham, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick. “So sad… have lost a few friends this way… time to raise awareness, please. My advice? Put your phone in the boot so you can’t be tempted to answer it or text in jams, etc, unless you stop properly.”
