Country Park pledges from Rudd and Owen

Concerned over recent developments in the Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve (HCPNR), Michael Madden, a former member of the Save Ecclesbourne Glen lobby group, decided to check out where the local Conservative and Labour candidates stand on these issues. Here he discusses his findings.

What next for the Bunker?

In mid-March, Hastings Borough Council (HBC) finally ordered the notorious ‘Bunker’ at Rocklands Caravan Park to be demolished. Where does that leave the planning permission (known as ‘952’ after its planning reference) that caused all the fuss? Bernard McGinley hears from the Save Ecclesbourne Glen group about what could happen next.

The Phil celebrates spring early

Hastings Philharmonic Choir mounts a spring celebration to rival Jack-in-the-Green on 11 April at St Mary in the Castle. Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana rivalled Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring in its mixture of the sacred and the profane, the breaking loose from the shackles of strict medieval mores and the youthful vigour of a spring rejuvenation. Chris Cormack examines the kind of people who wrote the poetry that inspired Carl Orff towards his life’s musical masterpiece, the ‘scenic cantata’ that is Carmina Burana.

SOS: Some people have become cynical about the way our society is organised e.g. finance, education, work, politics, the tax system and legal system, to mention just a few sectors. Furthermore, in the midst of growing inequality many of our core institutions are now perceived as serving a privileged elite, and neglecting or exploiting ordinary people. What is your view on this issue and what might you do to address the problem?  What is your vision of the ‘good society’ and how might such a society be organised and financed?
