Archery Ground: new owner seeks changes

A new owner has acquired the Archery Ground in St Leonards and applied to make changes to the planning permission granted to its predecessor. A number of objections have been lodged, including by the Save The Archery Ground group. Nick Terdre reports.

Edward Burra: a wry painter

Over the years artists have long been attracted to the light and sea of East Sussex. John Everett Millais, Holman Hunt, Joseph Mallord and William Turner all sketched and painted in the area. And still artists come to live in Hastings, St Leonards and Rye and contribute to the vivid, cultural mix.

Panfilov triumphs in piano concerto finale

The 11th Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition was won in fine style at the White Rock Theatre last Saturday by Russian-born pianist Alexander Panfilov, with a bravura performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3.

Behind the walls of the garden

Last time I visited the walled garden, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick, sunflowers were blooming and produce was being harvested. This time, as I passed through the brick doorway, I spied crocuses, rosemary, buds and embryonic bloomings, children playing and adults leisurely preparing the ground for the new season of growth. I’d come to speak to new chairperson, Mary Dawson, to update me on the latest news.

Roger flies away

Sean O’ Shea attended the funeral of local fiddler Roger Churchyard at the Hastings Crematorium on Wednesday 25th of February. With the help of Roger’s family and some of his friends he prepared the following tribute.
