MPs given wake-up call

Last week, chief executive Naomi Ridley and her colleagues at Hastings Furniture Service went to Westminster to deliver a pillowcase to every MP, asking ‘How did you sleep last night?’, in an effort to raise awareness of the consequences of cutting Local Welfare Assistance. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked Naomi to let us know what happened.

White Rock Baths Photo by Brian Rybolt

White Rock Baths, past and present

The White Rock Baths on Hastings seafront have been derelict for a number of years; although subjected to regular vandalism and allowed to deteriorate, this underground labyrinth still reveals poignant signs of its past incarnations, when it contained two swimming pools, a Turkish Bath and both roller and ice-skating rinks. Intrigued and captivated by derelict buildings, Hastings-based Brian Rybolt, a photographer for over 45 years, is exhibiting a captivating series of photographs of the White Rock Baths at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery. HOT’s Zelly Restorick went to the exhibition and met up with Brian to talk about his fascination with decaying buildings.

Christina Lucey of Bexhill and Hastings WDM reports.

Reconnect with your Inner Child…

Opera director Jenny Miller invites you to ‘reconnect with your Inner Child’ and enjoy a remarkable Handel opera next Saturday, 19 July, at St Mary in the Castle, as part of the Longborough Opera tour. HOT’s Chris Cormack talks to Jenny about the staging of Handel’s Rinaldo.

Hastings welcomes its own new orchestra

For those lovers of the International Composers Festival, who regret not having their usual opportunity of hearing recently composed classical tonal music here in Hastings, there is – this year at least – an exciting new development for romantic music, namely the first official concert of the Hastings Sinfonia. And the concert will include many much loved soloists from earlier Composers’ Festivals for us to enjoy, once again under the expert lead of conductor Derek Carden. HOT’s Chris Cormack writes.
